The 23 local businesses between Chestnut and Prospect on Independence Blvd. will chime in by having National Flags of their origin in front of their businesses that day from 1-6 pm. Ten different nationalities are represented by the shops in this business district.

For: John and Esther Mc Murray owners of the Dariy Queen
When: Wed. September 23, 2009 from 5 pm to 6 pm.
Where: 2635 IndependenceBlvd
Why: John and Esther McMurray have been in the icy sweets and treats business for 43 years.

The store has been there since July 4, 1952. Esther started out working for the original owner for 13 years before purchasing and taking over the business January 1, 1980. The McMurrays' will have owned the business for 30 years in January 2010.

The McMurrays' have seen four generations come through over the years with many loyal customers that come back long after they left the neighborhood. Esther said that not a day goes by that they help at least one person a day needing water, a bite to eat or a helping hand. They have noticed an increase in the homeless population over the last seven years. Their daily hours are from 11 am to 7 pm during the spring, summer and fall. They are closed from December to March.

The World Famous Dilly Bar’s are made fresh at this very location. These are not a factory ice cream bar. They are ice cream on a stick dipped in chocolate. YUM. Esther and John will be celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary this September 2009. Esther is known for her “beehive hairdo” and can be recognized almost anywhere. I asked if retirement was in the near future. Esther said that “As long as the Lord gives them good health they will keep the Dairy Queen running”.

Artist, INC Graduates Its First Class

Artist, INC graduated its first class of 24 Kansas City artists last month. Developed by the UMKC SBTDC in cooperation with the Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City and the Charlotte Street Foundation, Artist, INC is an intensive 8-week workshop to teach artists the skills they need to effectively manage the business components of their art careers. Here's what participants said about their experience in the inaugural session:

"I would highly recommend Artist, INC to my friends
--and already have --because I think it is a fun and informative way
to deal with the many topics and issues most artists would rather ignore."

"It was extremely useful for me.
I will be sharing a lot of what I have learned with my art friends.
I love that it was catered to what we do
and was broken up into digestible topics.
We were able to cover a lot of material."

"It is an opportunity to reserve time, each week while the class is in session, to seriously address the impediments to success that we all face. It may carry on beyond the class, to create new, GOOD habits. It certainly offers the chance to meet talented, generous, funny, innovative, ambitious, LOCAL artists, ones that one may not cross paths with in any other venue."

The second session of Artist, INC to be offered in the Fall of 2009 is already full, but three more sessions will be offered in 2010. Check the October newsletter for exact dates and application instructions. For additional information contact Diane Scott at scottdia@missouri.edu or 816-235-6769.
